It’s official… Shopping IS Australia’s Greatest Sport!

The gloves were off and the gold medals were out, as celebrity Warringah Mall Eagles Angels battled it out in a heated debate at the Manly Golf Club on lucky Friday 13th.  It was war as they donned their shopping and sporting wings in the name of charity arguing the question Is Shopping Australia’s Greatest Sport?

The winning team, consisting of Wendy Harmer, Tracey Spicer and Kerri Pottharst, smashed their opposing sporty team - Layne Beachley, Naomi Flood and Anne Sargeant in the great debate.

Anne Sargeant claimed, in a respectful, sporting manor, “at best it [shopping] is a pastime, at worst it’s a disease.” She even called her opponent Wendy Harmer, an oniomaniac (a person with an uncontrollable desire to buy things).  To which, Wendy Harmer claimed, the only reason shopping is not clasified as a sport is that men don't like it and women are better at it.

Tracey Spicer clinched the deal for the “Yes” team by quoting convincing stats from an AMP Capital Shopping Centre RRP report that 84% of Australians say they expect to spend more next year.  She also stated that Australia was led by the nation’s greatest and most dedicated shopping icon – Gough Whitlam – a man who put his job on the line to go on a spending spree to the Middle East to buy a natural gas pipeline and uranium enrichment plant. 

Sponsors, Warringah Mall were pleased with the victory from the celebrity team as over a hundred and fifty of their local shoppers turned out to witness the debate and were treated to a parade of the latest fashions from Myer, Warringah Mall.

Bear Cottage, the first children’s hospice in NSW were the beneficiaries of the day with over $6,000 raised in the raffle alone.
