They Don’t Make Rubber Gloves for ex Footballers!

2/9/2009           By Mary Finkelsen - Warringah Mall Eagles

Rubber gloves for athletes and rock legends are an easy fit…but try getting some onto ex footballers and it’s a different story.  We discovered this on the weekend when the Warringah Mall Eagles Angels along with Tender Gourmet Butchery held a sausage sizzle in Dolphin Court on the weekend.  All proceeds were donated to Bear Cottage.

Rock legend Kirk Pengily and fiancé Layne Beachley were the first to don the OH&S plastic gloves.  I started serving but after I saw the disappointment on a boys face when I served him instead of Layne I decided I would dedicate my time to being chief butterer of bread!  Nici and Mel then came along and helped out.   Deb Watson decided at the last moment to help out despite her very large tummy (Deb is pregnant and due early November!).

Now the interesting part was trying to get the gloves on Bob Reilly, one of the directors of the Manly Leagues Club.  His hands were too large and he kept breaking them!  We sent out for XXLarge gloves and solved that problem.  However try getting gloves on the very bent fingers of Noel ‘Crusher’ Cleal.  He first asked us if we had plastic gloves with bent fingers!!!  We spent the good part of a few minutes trying to slowly get the gloves over the bent fingers.  It was most entertaining!

Also joining us was Manly Sea Eagles sponsor Debra Fitzgerald who always gives me a hand with Angels activities.  She helped by making sure there was a smooth transition between getting the cooked sausages and onions off the barbeque to the Angels and boys serving.

Now here’s something new that I learnt….you can buy frozen chopped up onions in packages (much like frozen peas or chips) for barbeques!!!  I had no idea!!

Anyway the event was a huge success and we discovered that we could have probably gone on for an extra hour or two instead of just the two hours…oh well…next time.

The lovely people from Tender Gourmet Butchery at the Mall gave the girls and boys a package of sausages to sample as a thank you to take home.  I spoke with Dave Badlan (hubby of Deb Watson) the next day who advised that the sausages were really lovely.  He tried Macadamia, Moroccan, Sun Dried and Thai Chicken….he loved the taste and said they weren’t oily. He was most impressed…..so there you go…if you want to try something a bit different to normal pork sausages….try their gourmet sausages!

The event managed to raise around $700 for the wonderful people of Bear Cottage.  No bad for two hours work!

Thank you Layne, Nici, Mel, Deb, Noel, Bob, Kirk and Debra.
Thank you to Tender Gourmet Butchery and to our wonderful sponsors Warringah Mall.
Thank you to the wonderful people of the Northern Beaches who came along and gave generously for Bear Cottage.
