Women of Manly Jacqueline Watson - Partner of Shane Rodney
| 7/9/2009 | By Mary Finkelsen - Eagles Angels Manager |
It’s always exciting when we have a new player join our wonderful boys and since Shane Rodney has joined the boys have won the Grand Final and a World Cup….not bad for the resume. So I decided to catch up with the woman behind the man – Jackie Watson. Talk about a pocket rocket! I figure if we are short a player throughout the season Jackie may like to try out – she runs, swims, rides bikes has been on the Gladiators and well just basically doesn’t stop! We talked about rodeos, Mighty Mouse on the Gladiators and Qigong sticks!

Jacqueline Watson
Do you prefer to be called Jackie or Jacqueline?
Jac actually ha ha but I’ll answer to anything these days.
Where do you and Shane come from? Tell us about his previous clubs.
Shane was born and grew up in Tamworth before moving to the Hawkesbury in 1994. His family moved to Riverstone and lived across the Road from my family. I was born in Schofields and moved to Riverstone with my family in 1986. Our Family's still live there today.
Shane played for Riverstone Razorbacks all through his junior footy and then was with the Panthers from 1999 up until our move to Manly this year. He is very loyal.
Where exactly is Riverstone?
It’s part of the Hawkesbury, about 15 mins West of Parramatta and 8 mins East of Windsor.
So does this mean you knew each other before you started going out? Or living across the road was just a coincidence?
No we had never met until that day, Shane said he knew me but I was obviously oblivious. His family had a rodeo arena and I used to ride my push bike down and sit on there arena fence and watch their Rodeo most weekends with friends from school when we were younger but I never made friends with them. We were the cool group (ha ha).
How interesting – a rodeo arena – did Shane ride anything?
Yes he was very talented! Before footy he was an aspiring Bull rider! His family and friends would practice from home (his brothers also rode, his Dad rode saddle bronc and his sister raced barrels) all the time and then he would travel around mostly with his Dad all over Australia competing. He had a bad accident at a rodeo one year, the bull he was riding crushed him against the arena and trampled his head. He tore his face open and ended up with serious head injuries. He then decided to have a go at footy.
(Obviously a safer option!)
How old are you both?
Im 26 and Shane is 25.
Where do you live?
Brookvale.
How long have the two of you been together? Where did you meet?
7yrs this August.
We met at the local park "Knudson Reserve". I was lunging my horse in the arena. Shane did laps of the block in his white genuine 1972 Nissan pulsar trying to get the courage to stop and say "hi". He pulled up three times over a 15 minute period, then finally on the third stop, got out of the car and started walking my way, then decided to go back to the car and put his cap and sunnies on (he's quite shy!!! ha ha) I actually freaked out and thought I was about to be abducted. About a week later we went for a horse ride together and have been best mates ever since.
Tell us about your first date?
A bare back double on my Palomino Quarter horse through the Riverstone bush, followed by dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Windsor.
So you are both keen ‘horse’ people? Do you get to ride much these days? Do you still have your horse?
We have some a few horses at Shane’s mums but rarely get to ride together. I still ride a bit with his sister but Shane can’t really afford to risk any injuries.
Marriage - anything in the pipeline? What about kids??!!!
THERE BETTER BE!!!!! No, we talk about marriage often but we prefer to spend our money on things like ski boats and motorbikes rather than saving for diamonds and parties. As for babies we both want lots, we need a ski crew!!!!
Do you go away a lot with the ski boats and motorbikes?
Every chance we get we head back to the Hawkesbury River. In the off-season it’s every weekend. As for the bikes my brother road races in The Australian Super Bike Championships so he has a shed full of two-wheeled fun at home. We always steal a ride and go for burn if the scooter is looking a bit weak. I prefer to head to Eastern Creek for ride days or ride the dirt bikes through the bush rather that riding on the road, there’s too many crazy drivers out there.
What do you do?
I’m a swimming coach, personal trainer, holistic nutrition and lifestyle coach and have studied PE teaching however I don't teach, it’s not for me.
I am about to start a new job at the Harbord Diggers as swim school co-coordinator, squad coach, learn to swim instructor and Personal trainer. Yay.
I also do Swedish massage and mobile spray tanning in my spare time!
Wow! You are versatile! Do you still do the massaging and spray tanning? Do you ever do either on Shane?
I still do both in my spare time, Shane never gets a spray tan but I’m forever stuck massaging him! He is quite good at spray tanning me though, however hasn’t done so well in the massaging me department!
How are you settling in to the Northern Beaches?
I lived here for about three years from 2005 to mid 2008 whilst I was studying Phys Ed. I find the ocean and the life style here very therapeutic so I am thrilled to be back!
When did Shane know he was coming to Manly - how did you feel?
Shane signed with Manly in August (I think) 2008, I was virtually packed and sitting in the car in late July.... ha ha. I was over the moon!
How did you feel about Shane joining the club then going overseas?
I was really excited. He is so dedicated to his footy so its great to see him living his dreams, making some fantastic mates and travelling, what a life! He deserves all of it!
How did he enjoy it? How did he cope given he was new to the club?
He's a bit of a house cat so he misses being home and he got hit with a virus early on in the trip which wiped him and a few other boys out for a few days other than that he played great footy and had two wins, one of which was the WCC (clearly no complaints there!). He had a few months of training before he left with the team and had settled in really well. He was a little anxious to play his first Match with the boys but was raving about how good it felt over the phone after the first match in England and hasn't stopped smiling since. I new he'd love it.
Do you enjoy Rugby League?
In all honesty I’m more of a "Shane" fan than a "footy fan", I had never ever watched a single footy match until I watched Shane play and I’m still getting in trouble for cheering at the wrong time (oops). The funniest part of this is I was a cheerleader for Manly for 2 seasons while I was studying out here yet I’m still not a footy fanatic!
How are you getting along with the girls and the players?
Haven't really met too many people as yet but the ones I have met have been really accommodating and welcoming which is really nice so I’m looking forward to seeing them about.
How do you relax - what are your hobbies?
Relax.... sleep maybe???…. Otherwise I’m ADD so there's no in between ha ha. I love anything out doors, I play soccer for Manly Vale, swim heaps, triathlons, gym, waterskiing, surfing, horse riding, I LOVE motor bikes and anything on two wheels and animals keep me busy too. I’m also hooked at the moment on Bikrams Yoga and yes of course shopping..
What do you mean by ‘animals’ keeping you busy? Do you have some at home?
We have a mini menagerie! A cat, 3 dogs, 3 horses. They all live at Shanes mums (she has a few acres) with a heap of other animals, except for my cat, she lives with us at Brookvale. Shane LOVES animals, he once even had a pet Bull.
Any person that loves animals has got to be a good person in my book. We have three dogs and 2 birds – we would love lots more – but can’t.
What do you have typically in your handbag (look in it!!) ?
Wallet, phone, lip gloss (x3), Qigong stick, business cards, swimming costume, cap, goggles, shorts, sock and singlet, diary, camera, whiteboard marker, stopwatch, whistle, lucky stones, green tea and a strainer thing.... Its a big bag...
Okay – what is a Qigong stick? And why a whiteboard marker? What’s with the luck stones?
A Qigong stick is a small stick used for Qigong (moving meditation). The white board marker is for work, I need it to write the swimming programs on the whiteboard and the lucky stones, well I’m a bit of a hippie so I like my lucky stones, they keep me positive.
How do you cope when they win or lose??
I’m very competitive and like to win but I cant stand all the public flack that goes with the NRL with wins and losses. Much to Shane’s disgust I believe that all the teams are professional and its any ones game on the day, you have a 50% chance of winning and 50% chance of losing every game.........plus if they don't make the top 8 that means extra early holidays (he he) ........If they do then its really exciting footy....so its a win from my view.......its just a game, as long as Shane pulls up ok and can still drive our boat i am smiling!
How does Shane cope with wins or losses?
He obviously prefers to win but as long as I have food and massage oil waiting on his return he's normally pretty happy.
Do you give him a rub done after a game? Which oils does he like?
Yes, he’s a massage maniac…receiver any way….. ha ha.
I have so many oils, also depends what his ailment is but he generally gets what he’s given.
Cooking? Do you like it?
I enjoy cooking because i like to no exactly what is in my food, I’m always more inspired by a big flash, shiny kitchen though, for some reason it tastes so much better.
What's your favorite food?
I love all foods (except tuna bake) which is not really a blessing at 5'4”!. I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would be seafood.
What's Shane's favorite food?
Chinese, hands down. Chicken and Cashews.
Does Shane like cooking?
His one and only dish is Tuna bake (yes the only meal I HATE) unless you call honey on toast or two-minute noodles cooking?
What do you like doing together?
Skiing and camping and burning about the beaches on his scooter is our fav at the moment but were just happy being around each other, I’m AMAZING company!
What sort of music do you both like?
We're both die hard country fans, Shane's still in the closet out here so far. If he tries to tell you otherwise just play a Keith Urban song and watch his foot start tapping. We like all music genres though.
Tell me about any superstitions he has with game days? Underwear/special music/special foods/rituals?
Night before the game he always has home made garlic bread, spaghetti and chicken snitzels and a can of Pepsi max (Yep my profession has really rubbed off on him!)
Shane comes across as quiet - is this the case?
He’s very shy at first but once he feels comfortable he purks up.
Does he have a sense of humor?
He makes me laugh every day. He's hardly ever being serious come to think of it!
Is he romantic?
He is the most UN romantic person I have ever met! He once (yes once) bought me a bunch of flowers on valentines day and was so excited to tell me he got them for free from his Mums friends shop! I’m seriously thinking of sending him to Hallys (Glenn Hall) for a week of romance and cooking training...I hear Hally is the Pepe Le Peu of romance and can cook more than Tuna bake!
What's his nickname? Does he have one for you?
Well this subject is currently touchy......Shane's family nickname is "Poo" as he has spent half of his life on the footy field and the other half on the toilet but his nickname between friends and family otherwise is "Ducky" or "Duck" as he has two little turned out Duck feet. He has however convinced the boys his nick name is "Rocket"???? Where that came from we will never know! Maybe he used to pick his nose, who knows? As for me, it’s quite embarrassing but my nick name is "captain awesome"........no explanation needed really.
Finish this sentence...I like it when Shane.....
Cleans up after himself. (rare but not extinct)
What do you think Shane likes about you the most?
I’m not sure he'd be able to pick just one thing, probably my intelligence and good looks I’d say?
Life after footy?
Enjoy our family and manage a business together.
What sort of business?
Well I dream big so I hope your ready
I’d like to own a holistic health leisure center with a lap pool, rehab pool, gym, beauty salon and gourmet organic café etc set on a few acres so we can run different sporting programs including Motorbike rider courses, horse riding, footy and soccer camps and maybe even a big ski dam. That way I can accommodate all kinds of people, incorporate all my passions and involve all of my family.
Shane would just like to own a coffee shop, maybe he can work in my leisure center café making organic tuna bake or honey toast (ha ha) and run kids footy camps once a month????
Wow that is huge – I love it! What star sign are you? What star sign is Shane?
I’m Virgo and Shane is Leo.
If Shane was to appear on Dancing with the Stars who would he pick?
Mighty Mouse off Gladiators, he thinks she's awesome.
(Just in case you miss the gag here…..because I nearly did….. Jackie was a challenger on Gladiators. She lost the Grand Final by 1 second. They called her Mighty Mouse!)
What about you?
John Travolta, he's a fascinating man.....plus I'd only turn up to win!
