Women of Manly - Jacki, Paul Stephenson's Partner

21/6/2006           By Manly Sea Eagles

In my next meeting of Women of Manly I met with Jacki Moffat, Paul Stephenson's partner.  Jacki bought along there two year old daughter Amelia and just when I thought my clucky days were over I had a moment when I wanted to take home this little mite!  She was seriously cute and cuddly - needless to say Jacki wasn't so keen on the idea so instead we talked about the Broncos, romance (or lack of it) and pokies.

How long have you and Paul been together?
We've been together for about three and a half years.  We met up in Brisbane and worked together at Broncos Leagues Club.  He did a traineeship within the club and I started working there.  We were both working on the pokies!

So he was playing for the Broncos?
He was playing for the Broncos - just the reserve grade.

How old is Paul?
He is 23 - in September this year.

Oh he's a baby - was Amelia planned?
Wasn't planned at all but we wouldn't change anything for the world.  Now I have another on the way so we are really excited - I'm due in mid August.  I have a feeling it's a boy - not an educated guess but just the way I'm carrying it.  It's very different to Amelia.

And your background?
My mum's from Papua New Guinea and my Dad's Australian.  I was born over here so I've got the best of both worlds.

How did your Mum and Dad meet?
My Mum and Dad met in PNG where Dad worked in a bank.

Did you always enjoy footy?
Yes - I grew up with my Dad and two brothers after my mum and dad split up.  So we always enjoyed watching it.  When I moved to Brisbane with some girls and I was working at the Broncos Leagues club we naturally went for them.

How long have you been with Manly?
This is his third season - he came here when he was twenty.

How are you finding the club from a women's point of view?
I really enjoy it here because it's so family orientated.  All the girls are lovely.  We just all get along really well.  We have girls' outings where as at the Broncos the first graders didn't socialise with the lower grades - no socialising between the teams.  Where as it's different here - socially we (the girls) see each other out of just meeting at the footy.

How do you relax?
With a two year old - I don't relax!!  I'm a full-time mum - I do a few hours of beauty work down at a hairdressing place at Dee Why - waxing, manicures and pedicures.  But I only do Thursdays and Fridays - I like to work around Amelia.

What does she do when you're working?
She goes to play group on Thursdays and on Fridays. Haley Kite (Brent's wife), she looks after her and I look after her ittle girl on a Tuesday.  She's having a baby as well so it's a bit tricky at the moment.  I work around Paul - the great thing is his job isn't typically 9 to 5 so he gets to spend a lot of time with me and Amelia.  We both enjoy that because we get to go out a bit together and he takes the pressure off me and he gives me time to myself.

What do you keep in your hand bag?
In my handbag I generally carry phone, wallet, lip gloss, sunnies, a pen - just the usual.

What do you like about Paul the best?
He's funny; he's the best Dad in the world.  He's so much like his mum and she's very wise!  He cooks - not a big variety but he helps out a bit with the steaks and simple things.  He really likes steaks and pizzas!  On the website they've got burritos - he does enjoy them but I don't think it's his favourite food!

After stupidly saying to Amelia that she can explore my bag we are now confronted with a little girl with red lipstick all over her lips but not quite on them!

My daughter used to do the same thing when she was Amelia's age except when she went to put the lipstick back she would never put the lipstick back in but just put the cover over them - so at one stage I had all these squashed lipsticks!  So my fault I let her have the lipstick!

So what's Paul like when he loses a game?
He gets disappointed with himself if he's had a bad game - because he's young and just starting out.  He doesn't bring it home with him - I think he enjoys coming home to his girls and it takes his mind off things.

Is he superstitious on game days?
He does - he said to me this year that he isn't going to be so funny about things but he still is.  Game day he likes to wear the same speedos, he likes to have a shave on the Wednesday before a game, in the sheds he likes to get his jersey last and he likes to put it on last!  Just little things.  Paul likes having a nice breakfast or going for a walk on the beach.

Does he have a nickname?
His nickname is 'Stevo', Hicksey nick named him 'Flipper' because he sounds like a dolphin when he laughs, 'Stevos' because the boys used to go to the little pizza place in Brookie called Mimos and it was a bit of a joke and stemmed from there.

Is he romantic?
Nope!

Nope?
No - he's very pragmatic - he's not spontaneous - he does remember the important dates but that's it.  He makes up for it in other areas because he's such a great dad.  It's hard with little kids - I think you become a bit more practical.

What are your hobbies?
Life's centred around Amelia - I love playing netball and Paul loves fishing but it's hard to find the time to do things - we love to go to the movies but with Amelia we haven't been since she was born.  It's a bit hard because we don't have families down here.  Paul's Mum is in Warhope and Dad is in Newcastle and my Mum is in Newcastle and my Dad is out in Warialda which is where Crusher comes from.

Oh - I also love to paint and to make things.

Any plans to get married?
I think it's inevitable but no plans at the moment.  We have other priorities - we'll know when the time is right?  Rather than spend lots of money on getting married we'd rather buy a house and get settled.

There's a few boys getting married in October (Sam Harris, Michael Witt) - why don't you sneak it in there!

Amelia looks like Paul doesn't she?
You know it's funny because I think she's starting to more like me - she's got my colour eyes (Paul's are blue) - I think it's because of her fair skin and fair hair people think she looks like Paul where as I think she really looks more like me!!

She's very affectionate?
She is - very!  She takes to people very quickly.

It's at this stage I decide I have to take her home.  I ask if she would come home with me but Amelia decides not to!

What does life hold for Paul after football?
Paul's a real people person - he'll probably get into marketing - we're not to sure what he wants to do - I guess we've got a bit of time.  We know we'd like to end up on the Gold Coast or have a farm - we are country bumpkins at heart.

He must find it exciting at the club at the moment - with Beavers 300th?
Yeah definitely - he feels he's really lucky playing with Beaver and Ben Kennedy - the experience helps.

Of all the Eagles Angels who would Paul like most to have lunch with?
Sarah Murdoch - I would love to have lunch with her!!
(Surprise, Surprise!!)
